Fountain Square

Fountain Square

While most of our trips and outings involve our whole family, Mike and I try to prioritize at least one date night per month when we can. It is so important to continue to grow and invest in each other throughout your marriage, and dating your spouse is the perfect way to do that.

In my introductory post, I mentioned that Mike and I fell in love with each other while exploring a certain part of Indianapolis, which is what inspired this project. For our date on this particular evening, we decided to return to that spot. We hadn’t been back in several years (actually since he proposed, and that’s a story for another time), and it was truly wonderful to be back in the place that had been such a huge part of our story five years ago.

(Also, I wanted to briefly clarify…we do live in Louisville, KY. However, Mike still works in Indianapolis for part of the week. When my work schedule allows, Trippe and I join him in Indy, so that we can have more time together as a family. That’s why you’ll see some of our posts take place exploring up there instead of Louisville. It’s a crazy season, but we are making it work and enjoying every minute we can while it’s here!)

If you ever want to feel like you’ve stepped back in time, put on your swingiest skirt or most dapper suit and head to Fountain Square on a Friday night. Go have dinner at one of the dive restaurants or bars, play a game of duckpin bowling, and then dance the night away during Friday night swing dancing. It’s sure to be an evening of great memories for you and your significant other.

Mike and I had our date on a Thursday, so we missed out on the old-fashioned fun. But, we still greatly enjoyed walking through the square, reliving sweet memories and having great conversations. We got to see what was new, and venture back in time with “remember when” for everything that stayed the same. While much of Indianapolis is growing and changing (we’ve been shocked by how much has changed even since moving to Louisville one year ago), Fountain Square still seems a bit frozen in time, and that’s a beautiful thing.

After we walked around for a while, we had a picnic and enjoyed simple salads that I had prepared earlier in the day. Prioritizing date night doesn’t have to be expensive at all; you just need time together, a little bit of scenery, and deep conversation.
